A Penny for Your Thoughts Discussion Protocol
A Penny for Your Thoughts Discussion Protocol provides a structure that ensures that all participants in a discussion have a voice. It works well with groups of 4-6 participants and is particularly helpful if you have some people who tend to dominate in group discussions. Below are directions for A Penny for Your Thoughts that are adapted from the Literacy Facilitators' Guide:
Provide three pennies to each participant. If you forget your pennies, tokens or slips of paper, will work just as well.
Share the topic or prompt with participants. Provide the group with a few minutes to individually record thoughts about the topic or prompt.
Group Discussion. You may want to place a time limit on the response for each coin(e.g., 1minute per coin).
Participants respond to the topic/prompt. Each time a participant contributes to the discussion, s/he must place one of his/her pennies in the center of the table. NOTE: Participants can only contribute if they have a penny to surrender.Once all participants run out of pennies you can divide up the pennies and start over.

Put Your Two Cents In Discussion Protocol
A variation on A Penny for Your Thoughts is the Put Your Two Cents In Discussion Protocol. The goal is to share, question, and support opinions. Below are directions from Protocols for Culturally Responsive Learning and Increased Student Engagement:
Each student has two pennies or tokens to use as talking pieces. In groups of four, each student takes a turn by putting one token in the center of the table and sharing his/her idea. Once everyone has shared once, each student then puts one more token in at a time and responds to what someone else in the group has shared, i.e., “I agree with because…”, or “I don’t agree with __ because…”, etc.
